April 13th, 2006Thursday Author: Stephen Wright In his comically overwrought new novel, The Amalgamation Polka, Stephen Wright (Meditations in Green, M31: A Family Romance), tracks the maturation of one Liberty Fish, who trots off to fight the Confederacy before abandoning his unit and adventuring through the South. His real purpose, it seems, is to confront his mother's ancestors on a run down Charleston plantation where he falls under the sway of his deranged grandfather who has given up cotton farming for a bizarre slavebreeding project. |
| Musical Guest: Jeff Hames Jeff Hames started playing the mountain dulcimer at the age of 9. Now in high school at Madison Central, he has incorporated his electric dulcimer into the school marching band, creating an unusual and unique sound. His new CD, It's Dulcimer Time, showcases his playing in a variety of styles, from traditional dulcimer music to rock and roll.Related link: Jeff Hames's website. |
| Musical Guest: Ben Payton Ben Payton is a native of Coila, south of Carrollton. He moved to Chicago as a teenager, and in the late '60s and '70s played guitar with blues and R&B acts including Bobby Rush, Junior Wells, Eddie Shaw, and Big Moose Walker. After getting married in the late '70s he stopped playing music actively for many years. In 2001 he began playing acoustic blues, and since moving back to Mississippi in 2003 he has been performing regularly. In June he will be returning to Chicago to perform at the Chicago Blues Festival. |
