Robert Hicks is the author of the New York Times bestseller, The Widow of the South. He is currently working as a music publisher and in artist management in both country and alternative-rock music.
He will be reading from his latest novel A Separate Country. Set in New Orleans in the years after the Civil War, A Separate Country is based on the incredible life of John Bell Hood, arguably one of the most controversial generals of the Confederate Army--and one of its most tragic figures. Robert E. Lee promoted him to major general after the Battle of Antietam. But the Civil War would mark him forever. At Gettysburg, he lost the use of his left arm. At the Battle of Chickamauga, his right leg was amputated. Starting fresh after the war, he married Anna Marie Hennen and fathered 11 children with her, including three sets of twins. But fate had other plans. Crippled by his war wounds and defeat, ravaged by financial misfortune, Hood had one last foe to battle: Yellow Fever. A Separate Country is the heartrending story of a decent and good man who struggled with his inability to admit his failures-and the story of those who taught him to love, and to be loved, and transformed him. |
| Musical Guest: The Mississippi Hills Band The Mississippi Hills Band consists of Sabrina Brown, fiddle; Ryan Miller, guitar and lead vocals; and Dave Spruill, bass. Roots is probably the best way to describe the band's music, though you might hear a song by Hank Williams Sr. right after a Judy Garland standard. All three members of the Mississippi Hills Band are Ole Miss employees: Brown is director of Brand Creative Services; Miller is programs manager for the Center for Manufacturing Excellence; and Spruill is an associate professor of leadership and counselor education. |
| Musical Guest: Grace Askew Grace Askew has honed her soulful alt-country style in her hometown of Memphis, as well as stints living in New York City and New Orleans, where she studied jazz guitar. Her EPs include Wasted Lipstick, and her latest, Hawthorne. She tours frequently with the bands, Groundspeak and Mojo Possum and has a Wednesday night residency at Neil’s on Madison Avenue in Memphis. Related link: Grace Askew Website. |
