Featuring

Author

Marion Barnwell

Marion Barnwell is author of the memoir, All the Things We Didn’t Say (University Press of Mississippi). Barnwell alternates between her story and the journal of her maternal grandmother, Mary DuBose Trice Clark.

Clark’s journal, written in 1959 when Clark was 77, describes her life in Mississippi, while artfully side-stepping anything controversial. Barnwell fills in those gaps with her story, written when she too was 77.

Barnwell’s narrative addresses profound themes of alcoholism, racism, shared family history, and the intricate dynamics between generations of women.

Music

Eden Brent

Blues pianist/vocalist, Eden Brent’s new album is Getaway Blues.

As Eden says, “Laid down in London. Mixed up in Memphis. Made in Mississippi.”

Produced by her husband, Bob Dowell, a British jazz trombonist and arranger, the album crackles with top British session pros including in-demand guitarist Rob Updegraff.

The result is Brent’s personal favorite album and one of her rawest and bluesiest.

Brent is a recipient of the Popular Music Award from Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters (for her album Ain’t Got No Troubles).

In addition, she has a dozen nominations for Living Blues Awards and is a former winner of the International Blues Challenge.

Eden Brent and Bob Dowell live in Greenville, MS with their chiweenie, Monty.

Soul City 3

Soul City 3, from Jackson, MS, are veteran drummer Denny Burkes, guitarist Tim Avalon and keyboardist Tyler Kemp.

The group plays in the classic organ trio style of Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff and Delvon Lamarr (who Denny, in fact, drummed for).

Get your groove on!
